Acrylic vs. MMA vs. epoxy: choosing a resin floor in Minnesota

Written for the facility manager staring at three bids and a January install window. Ten-minute read, no fluff.

First, the terminology trap. In commercial flooring, "acrylic flooring" and "MMA flooring" are the same product: methyl methacrylate, a reactive acrylic resin. Some installers say acrylic, some say MMA, a few say PMMA. If you've collected bids that seem to describe three different systems, check the data sheets — you may be comparing one product under three names against epoxy, the other big resin family.

The one difference that decides most Minnesota projects: cure

Epoxy is the default resin floor nationally, and it's a fine product — in a warm, empty building with time to spare. Its weaknesses are exactly the conditions this state specializes in:

Cold. Most standard epoxies want the slab well above 50°F and slow down or fail below that. Acrylic/MMA systems cure at temperatures down around 0°F and below — which is why they're the go-to for freezer warehouses, coolers, unheated docks, and any January install where heating the space to epoxy temperatures would cost more than the floor.

Time. An MMA floor typically takes foot traffic in about an hour per coat and full service the same day; epoxy systems commonly need days of cure before you can roll equipment on them. For a food plant that runs six days a week or a grocery back-of-house that can't close, the difference between a weekend shutdown and a week-long one is the whole decision.

About cost: installed prices in this market vary a lot with floor condition, thickness, and texture — commonly somewhere in the high single digits to high teens per square foot for MMA systems, with epoxy often a few dollars less. Treat those as orientation, not a quote; the slab dictates the price, which is why every serious bid starts with a site visit.

The honest downside: install odor

MMA's monomer smells strong — sharp and unmistakable — while it's being installed, and for a few hours after. It's a predictable complaint on jobs where nobody planned for it. Good installers isolate the HVAC zone, vent to the exterior, and schedule the pour when adjacent areas are empty (overnight or weekend). If a bidder shrugs off the odor question, that's a red flag worth more than their price.

When epoxy is still the right call

Fair is fair: for a heated warehouse floor with a flexible schedule, a garage showroom, or a budget-driven office slab, epoxy's lower price wins and the slow cure costs you nothing. Acrylic/MMA earns its premium where cold, downtime, or thermal shock (fryers, kettles, blast chillers, wash-downs) are part of daily life.

1. What slab temperature is your system rated to install at — and what's your plan if the forecast drops? 2. Hour-by-hour, when can we take foot traffic, pallet jacks, forklifts? 3. How will you handle odor — zone isolation, exterior venting, off-hours pour? 4. What surface prep is included (shot-blasting vs. grinding), and is moisture testing in the bid? 5. Can you show me a comparable local install — a food plant, cooler, or kitchen I can ask about?
